Don Jorge Salles Cuervo, descended from one of tequila's great families, founded El Tequileño in 1959 in the town of Tequila itself, and the house still works from his original recipe. By 1961 the landmark bar La Capilla was pouring its Blanco in the now-famous La Batanga cocktail, and leadership has passed through three generations to grandson Tony Salles, with recent years bringing a distillery expansion and the Casa Salles boutique hotel on site.
