History

Los Abuelos is the Mexican-market name of Tequila Fortaleza. Fifth-generation distiller Guillermo Erickson Sauza, a descendant of Don Cenobio Sauza, whose family opened its first distillery in 1873, revived his grandfather's Destilería La Fortaleza in the town of Tequila and launched the brand in 2005. A US trademark conflict forced the export name change to Fortaleza, but production still uses the old brick oven, tahona wheel, wood fermentation tanks and the two original copper pot stills.
